Cannabis Dispensary License Renewal: California & Colorado Guide

California: The DCC Annual Transition
The Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) has completed the transition from provisional to annual licenses. As of January 1, 2026, all businesses must hold an annual license to operate. These expire exactly one year from the date of issuance.
The Hard Deadline: The DCC opens the renewal window 60 days before expiry. If you miss the expiration date, you have a maximum 30-day grace period with a 50% late fee penalty. After 30 days, your license is forfeited and you must apply for a completely new license.
Colorado: The MED Renewal Portal
Colorado's Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) has moved to a two-year licensing cycle. Both employee occupational licenses and business licenses are now valid for two years. Most significantly, as of February 18, 2026, the MED has discontinued physical badges in favor of digital-only licenses verified via the myColorado™ app.
